Mount Palomar Winery

Mount Palomar Winery Mount Palomar Winery, located in the Temecula Valley wine appellation, is a fine wine estate dedicated to making wines of distinctive taste and high quality. Located among rolling hills and mesa lands at 1400 feet elevation, Mount Palomar is a working wine estate with 40 acres of producing vineyards overlooked by the Palomar Mountain range. John H. Poole started Mount Palomar's vineyards in 1969 pioneering the new wine region and growing the finest grapes possible. Formerly a radio electronics engineer and station owner, he wanted to establish a new agricultural business and enjoy the relaxed pace that accompanied it. Pioneering the new Temecula region was natural for him. He had formerly helped pioneer early military radar use during WWII, established California's only offshore radio station (KBIG-AM on Santa Catalina Island), established one of the nation's first UHF television stations (now Channel 22 in Los Angeles), and created Los Angeles' first commercially successful FM radio station. John established the original Mount Palomar vineyards, and was our first winemaker in 1975. He created a place where people could immerse themselves in the world of fine wine in a pleasant and relaxed Wine Country atmosphere. John Poole's son, Peter Poole, took over operation of the Winery in 1985, making it the first winery in the Temecula Valley under second-generation leadership. Peter introduced a number of "firsts" in the Temecula Valley, most significantly beginning the trend to Mediterranean grape varieties, which is so significant today. He and Winemaker, Etienne Cowper have combined creative forces in creating top quality, Temecula Valley wines. Mount Palomar makes a range of fine wines with special emphasis on classic, Bordeaux style blends and Italian varieties. Mount Palomar also has a twenty five-year history of producing excellent Port and Solera Cream Sherry. The winery uses two main brands: Mount Palomar and Castelletto. The Castelletto name ("little castle" in Italian), used by Mount Palomar on our Italian style wines, comes from the family of our Founder's wife, Olivia de Reya Poole. The name "Castelletto" is a title awarded in Italy to Antonio and Sebastiano de Reya in 1735. The Castle and Star image on the labels is found on the original Castelletto crest. Recognitions we have gained include four Best of Show awards at major wine competitions, and numerous Best of Class and Gold Medal distinctions. A Mount Palomar wine has been named "Best Wine of the Southern California Region" by the California State Fair five separate times, most recently in 2005. Mount Palomar has also been recognized for sustainable environmental practices in viticulture.

Products

  Best of Vintage Syrah
This new release of our best vintage Syrah is rich and intense with deeply concentrated fruit characteristics. It features full, yet smooth tannins for long aging.
  Castelletto Cortese
This Cortese is clean and well balanced with citrus nuances, a refreshing mineral quality, and the lightest touch of oak. It is a wonderful match with seafood pastas, such as Linguine alle Vongole, Fettuccine all’Alfredo with Shrimp, and almost any grilled fish. It also matches well with Lemon and Rosemary Chicken, and Baked Brie with Honey Glaze.
  Castelletto Sangiovese
We were the first to introduce Sangiovese to the Temecula Valley in 1989. We have developed a complex, full flavored wine, true to its Italian origins. Its spicy, dried fruit and berry flavors match well with steak with mushroom sauce, Italian cured meats, and grilled salmon.
  Catelletto Trovato
Trovato is a super-Tuscan style blend of the Italian Sangiovese and the French Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc varieties. Trovato displays zesty, spicy fruit from Sangiovese along with the rich character and fullness of the French varieties – a complementary flavor match that enhances the best characteristics of each classic variety. Trovato, meaning, “something discovered” in Italian, is one of our favorite red wines and uses only the best grapes from low yielding vineyards. For the 2002 vintage, only 241 cases were produced and aged in small French, Hungarian, and American barrels. This is a very special, limited availability wine.
  Mount Palomar Chardonnay
Our Chardonnay is a rich, dry wine with a distinct balance of crisp fruit, a gentle accent of oak, and a long, smooth finish. The Chardonnay fruit was picked at several levels of ripeness, 100% barrel fermented with extended aging on the yeast lees, and a partial malo-lactic fermentation. This combination helps create a wine with a pleasing array of fruit flavors and the full, lasting finish, that characterize our wines. This Chardonnay is a delightful accompaniment to seafood of all kinds. It is best matched with grilled seabass or swordfish, shrimp with garlic, butter, herbs, and a touch of parmesan cheese, and also veal piccata or pork chops.
  Mount Palomar Cloudbreak
This rich, full-bodied wine is dark in color and extremely silky. This classis meritage blend features a beautiful lush nose and flavorful, long-lasting finish.
  Mount Palomar Limited Reserve Port
“Best Ruby Port in California” – California State Fair 2003. A true artisan wine that contains a blend of vintages aged up to five years. Winner of 5 GOLD medals in 2003.
  Mount Palomar Meritage
This vintage is medium-bodied and displays an array of complex flavors that unfold on the palate, ending in a lingering aftertaste. The aromas and flavors are those of cherry, anise, black pepper, and cedar. The tannins are smooth with a balanced acidity, indicating a wine that should age and develop, while drinking very well now. This Meritage wine goes exceptionally well with red meat dishes like Herbed Roast Lamb or Veal Chops, Pepper Steak, and also Chicken with Garlic, Lemon, and Rosemary.
  Mount Palomar Riesling
Since 1984 Mount Palomar has been recognized for our outstanding Riesling: aromatic, fresh, and light on the palate. Our Riesling grapes are picked at the first sign of ripeness, when the grape sugars are balanced by a crisp acidity, and the fruit flavors are delicate and true to a Germanic style. The aromas are of orange blossoms, peaches, and apricots. The flavor is somewhat sweet, but not cloying and especially complements with sweet salads like Chinese Chicken Salad, Curried Chicken Salad with almonds and raisins, salty foods like glazed ham, fried chicken, and a variety of picnic fair.
  Mount Palomar Solera Cream Sherry
Aged a minimum of three years in California’s only remaining outdoor solera. A unique, rich, wine with roasted hazelnut and caramel flavors.
  Mount Palomar Syrah
Our Syrah is more in the traditional French style than the Australian Shiraz style. That means the cherry fruit flavors combine with hints of sage, black pepper, anise, and smoke to create a dry, complex wine that matches very well with foods of similar character. We enjoy our Syrah with stews and cassoulets, smoky barbecued meats, and beefsteak wrapped in bacon.
