Established in 1979 by Harry McWalters ( founder of the BC Wine Institute ) and Lloyd Schmidt. The winery was sold in 2000 to Vincor International. Production runs about 50,000 cases and is a popular winery to visit. Winemaker is Mark Wendenberg. Sumac Ridge Estate Winery was the first Okanagan winery to produce premium sparkling wines, as well as a Port-style wine, from premium vinifera grapes.
At the Summerland winery site, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes are grown. Further south, on a 115-acre vineyard in Oliver (in the south Okanagan) grown are such noble red varieties as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, in addition to a number of white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc.
