Fabbioli Cellars

Fabbioli Cellars Fabbioli Cellars is a business and a concept that has been in the works for almost 20 years. When we moved to California in 1987, we had in the back of our minds the idea that we could find a piece of land and grow some grapes. It sure sounded easy back then! Kids, life, careers, land prices, cash flow and family steered us back East in 1997. We knew that the idea would not work for us in CA, but our time was well spent in gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence to make it happen in Virginia. In early 2000, Colleen was driving young Sammy around to get him to settle down and stumbled into a 25 acre parcel in the southern Lucketts area, just north of Leesburg in Loudoun County. We had been seeking land for a while but were unable to find the right piece. Although this piece did not fit all the parameters of a perfect vineyard site, it would be able to grow good grapes. It also filled many other concerns and needs for our family as a home. The planting began in 2001, along with building the house. The main planting was Merlot with a little Petit Verdot for blending.

Directions

Products

  Cabernet Franc
Bright cherry and vanilla characters accented with hints of herb, pepper and berry fruit. This medium bodied red is a great wine for food or sipping. The finish is very pleasant and lingers long enough to contemplate.
  Chambourcin
Red currants and berries in the nose with a slightly lush mouthfeel, this lighter styled, inviting red is a great example of the varietal characters of Chambourcin. Drink this chilled or at room temperature to enjoy its lighter tannins in the front palate and the lingering finish. Bring this to your next cookout or have it with a plate of pasta.
  Fratelli
The goal on this wine was a reasonably priced dry red that Al Pacino would drink with a plate of pasta. Chambourcin based with Tannat for structure, this wine has berry fruit, a smooth mid-palate and enough tannins to make this a hearty wine for the boys. Fratelli means 'brothers', and you can never have too many brothers.
  Fratelli - Cabernet Sauvignon
"Fratelli" means brothers, and this is the wine to share with all of them. This big Bordeaux varietal makes a wine with balanced fruit, spice, and oak up front. This wine has a firm mid palate and a bold finish. Limited production - due to be released in May, 2008.
  Raspberry Merlot
Raspberry wine made from the fruit grown on our farm blended with Merlot to make a firm and fruity not too sweet dessert wine. Barrel aged to marry the flavors and impart some oak character; this wine has fruit, spice, wood and sweetness. It's a real pleasure after dinner.
  Tannat
  Tre SorĂ©lle
This flagship wine was released in December of 2005 and has been a big hit. A Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, this wine has fruit, oak, floral and spice characters. The structure of this wine shows forward tannins, good acid and a soft, lingering finish. Tre Sorélle means 'three sisters' and these ladies get top billing.

Rhodies says...
Fabbioli Cellars is a smaller family winery, but one with a vintner with three decades of experience, mainly on the west coast. What Doug Fabbioli does with Virginia grapes boarders on the magical. Sure, we tasted a slew of good wines here, but let me just sing praises for two that we savored, Fabbioli Cellars Chambourcin and Reserve Cabernet Franc. There are many times when you experience good high priced Virginia wines, but the cost does not necessarily justify a purchase. This is an exception with their Reserved Cabernet Franc. Though this $30 treat can be consumed today, it truly needs to rest a few more years to optimize its potential. As for the oaked bright Chambourcin, today is the day to open or in the next year or so since we found this grape tends to go flat in time. Lots to choose from here that are all good.
