This port was barreled down in the fall of 1996 and hasn't seen the light of day until early April 2004 when the public had a chance to taste what would become the First Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Norton Port made in Virginia and the only 100% Norton Port made in Virginia since the 1800's. At bottling, this wine will taste as though it had been aged in the bottle for over 20 years.

ALBARINO, arguably Spain's best white grape variety, is sometimes referred to as Spain's RIESLING, as much because it resembles the citrusy side of RIESLING in character as because its fragrant, spritz-fresh style makes it the perfect seafood white. It has plenty of body and fresh acidity with grapefruity, citrus-perfumed flavors.

This is a soft, ripe, leathery, peppery and berry scented wine with an earthiness that is very popular with Rhone wine drinkers. This is a complex and long lived wine that is also ready to drink now. The Carignan donates raspberry flavors, the Mourvedre, a spicy earthiness, the Syrah, deep plum and cherry flavors and aromas, the Touriga Nacional, coffee and pepper, and finally the remaining blend gives depth and complexity. This wine is perfectly matched with any hearty meal including wild game and spicy stews.

These wines are the result of my hobby gone wild and the long lost dream of Chateau Le Cabin has finally come true. In the early 80's the great experiment began in my log cabin in Aroda, Virginia. The cabin's cellar was full of home winemaking gear and very small barrels full of the first tastes of Horton wine. Twenty-seven wines and 20 years later, Chateau Le Cabin has finally been made in the form of fruit wines unlike any I've ever tasted. Unlike most fruit wines, these are not candy sweet, but more like serious premium grape wines that are well balanced in acidity and sugar. Grape wine was added to make the wine more complex and food-worthy.

This complex wine is a classic Grenache based Rhone style blend. The fruity Grenache is enhanced with pepper spice of Mourvedre, smoke and leather flavors of Syrah, rich texture of Carignan, and the floral notes of Tinta Cao, while the Viognier adds a tropical perfume. The wine is soft and supple which makes it excellent by itself or as an accompaniment to cheeses or tomato based dishes.

Dionysus was the last god to enter Olympus and now sits at the right hand side of Zeus as one of the Twelve Great Ones. In Greek Mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine, was born of fire and nursed by rain, like the hard burning heat that ripens the grapes and the water that keeps the vines alive. From only the finest harvest seasons do we choose to make the Horton Dionysus wine. This Dionysus is made from two Portuguese grapes, Touriga Nacional (77%), Tinta Cao (13%), and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The Touriga Nacional provides the intense layers of fruit while the Tinta Cao adds the floral nose followed by the tannins of Cabernet.

Dennis Horton is known in the wine industry as the 'Lone Rhone Ranger of the East' and has shown that world class wines can be made in Virginia with hot weather grapes. At Horton Vineyards we currently have under vine 30 different varieties of grapes including 5 different Rhone vines; Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache, Syrah and last but definately not least Mourvedre (alias Mataro, Morrastel, Esparte).

The Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal), not unlike Virginia, is one of the hottest wine regions in the world. It is known for making some of the world's finest wines from the four grapes (Tempranillo, Graciano, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cao) which make up this dry Virginia red wine. This wine shows forward fruit aromas of wild berries, extremely soft chocolate cherry tannins, and a very long spicy finish.

Marsanne is an increasingly popular white grape variety probably originating in the northern Rhone region of France. It is earning itself a reputation as a full bodied, characterful varietal, or blending partner for more aromatic, acid varieties such as Roussanne & Viognier. The 1998 Horton Marsanne is medium colored, full bodied, aromatic, lush, with a long tropical finish with a hint of almonds throughout.

Nebbiolo, the great black grape variety produces a most distinctive and distinguished wine. The name, Nebbiolo, is a derivation of nebbia, or fog, a frequent phenomenon in the Piedmont of Italy in October when the Nebbiolo grape is harvested. Nebbiolo grown by Horton in the Piedmont of Virginia produces a delightful aromatic complexity and fullness of flavor which balances the acidity and soft tannins.

Norton is a native Virginia grape that produced the internationally prize winning clarets of the Monticello Wine Company of Charlottesville in the late 1800's. Our Norton has a dark, rich color and an intensely fruity aroma of plums and tart cherries. Ageing in oak for 14 months has given this wine a long, flavorful, spicy finish. This high quality Bordeaux variety deserves to be better known as well as more popular but it doesn't always get ripe, especially in marginal climates. It is thick-skinned and produces richly concentrated, intense red wines which are usually added in small proportions to Médoc reds. It's grown in small quantities in California's Napa Valley and is currently viewed in parts of Australia, notably the Riverland, as a variety with the potential to produce premium reds.

Aromas of bacon fat mingle nicely with the fruity red berry core. The light dusty tannins should integrate well with some bottle age. This wine was aged in new and old french and american oak barrels for 12 months then the Mourvedre and Pinotage were blended to enhance the spice (mourvedre) and smoke (pinotage) of this wine.

Tannat, a noble grape originally known for making big tannic wines of the Madiran in southwest France, produces this rich, full-bodied red wine, with a strong tannic backbone, leathery fruit flavors, and a long spicy finish. This wine will age beautifully for 7-10 years.

The mainstay of Rioja and a host of other Spanish reds, TEMPRANILLO is a versatile grape which is equally well used to making juicy young strawberryish reds as well as more serious, oak-aged reds with a veneer of vanilla, liquorice and tobacco spice characters overlaying the strawberry flavors. Like SANGIOVESE, it can be very savoury, a quality often defined as tobacco leaf, and it becomes leathery with age.

Ripe fruit with a slight lemon finish make this a perfect Crab Cake/Seafood wine.
