Marietta Cellars
|
|
Marietta Cellars is located just outside the little town of Geyserville in one of California's premier wine growing regions, Sonoma County. Owner and winemaker Chris Bilbro initially founded Marietta Cellars in 1979 in an abandoned cow barn in the Dry Creek Valley. Over the last twenty-five years, Chris has developed a product of incredible consistency both in quality and price with relatively complete anonymity.
The grapes are primarily from Sonoma and Mendocino County and grown in older, dry-farmed vineyards with limited production per acre. These are grapes that produce wines with the maximum concentration of fruit and complex flavors. The initial case production for Marietta Cellars' Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon was only about 3,000 cases combined. Today, case production nears 35,000. The wines currently produced are Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, a proprietary blend called Old Vine Red, and a limited-quantity special blend called Angeli Cuvée. Occasionally, a Port is added to the line-up. Marietta Cellars continues the tradition of family involvement. Chris' four sons are active in winery activities at various levels…Jake, Scot, and Sam have more recently been joined by brother Lucas, who is now eight. Marietta Cellars wines are sold in 48 states as well as Canada, Europe, Thailand, New Zealand, and Japan. Because of the limited production and allocation of the wines, there are no tours, tastings, or retail sales on the premises. The wines of Marietta Cellars are a personification of Chris Bilbro's personality, outlook on life, and general lifestyle. Chris believes that good wine is the perfect complement to good food and good friends. Pleasurable pursuits such as cooking, fishing, hunting, gardening, and entertaining add balance to the flavor of wine, as they do to life.

Angeli Cuvée
In comparison to past Cuvee’s, the 2003 Angeli Cuvee, in its youth, offers a bit more focus, hinting towards increased longevity. Dense and luscious as always, there is a deep core of ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors that when paired with hints of oak and licorice combine to offer a huge wine. The combination of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane blend harmoniously with toasty oak assuring for an ongoing evolution of flavor and aromatic complexity.

Cabernet Sauvignon
With the release of our 04 Cab, we are continuing with the change that we made with the 03 vintage: the wine being 100% Alexander Valley appellation and 100% estate grown. Juicy intense currant flavors and aromas dominate the flavor profile of this offering. While undeniably fruit forward, there is an unexpected level of complexity that promises that this wine that will only improve over the next 5-10 years.

Emilia's Cuvée
Montepulciano is a very late ripener, usually picked here in early November. The 2004 ripened earlier and the sugars were higher. The wine is all around bigger and rounder with a richer mouth and feel. Aromas are curiously similar to the leaner, elegant 2003, earth, tar, licorice and dried herbs. The 2004 Emilia’s Cuvée is broad, dense and lush, a bit jammy on the palate, and the flavors hang to a lengthy finish.

JB Cellars Margaret Anne
his proprietary blend of Arneis and Tocai Friulano is a perfect wine for those hot summer days. Clean, crisp, and light, it is a great compliment to fruits and cheeses, seafood, and other light faire. This limited production blend offers floral and fresh fruit aromas that lead to a focused core of mineral and citrus characters followed by a clean refreshing finish.
|
Marietta Petite Sirah
With the release of our 04 Petite Sirah, we are continuing with the change that we made with the 03 vintage: the wine being 100%Alexander Valley appellation and 100% estate grown. As compared to the 03 vintage, the 04 offers even more blueberry fruit flavors complemented by a mineraly dried herb character. With such big mouth feel and structure, this wine should age and improve extremely elegantly over the next 10 years.

Old Vine Red Lot #40

It is primarily comprised of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane as well as smaller amounts of Cabernet and Syrah. Various Italian varietals round out the blend.
Old Vine Red Lot 40, in particular, exemplifies a perfect marriage of approachability and complexity. The core of Zinfandel fruit is as apparent and inviting as always, while additions of Cabernet, Syrah, and Italian varietals add noticeably complex aromas and flavors both aromatically and on the palate.

Port Lot One
With the Marietta Port Lot One, winemaker Chris Bilbro begins a new tradition for Marietta Cellars. Following in the footsteps of the Old Vine Red “lot system,” a port will now be released periodically. The release will not be vintaged however, allowing for maximum blending ability, which in turn yields the greatest levels of consistency from one “lot” to the next. Lot One is a limited production blend consisting of Touriga, Souzao, Tinta Cao, Alvarlhao, Bastardo, and Zinfandel. Aged in new and seasoned French oak, it is not as sweet as traditional Portugese and Australian styles. With more of an emphasis on ripe, rich fruit, the nose offers deep, lush aromas. The mouth follows suit with a syrupy feel that drips with lingering jammy port and a subtle hint of toasty oak flavors.
|
Port Lot Two
With the Marietta Port Lot 2, we are continuing the “Lot series” tradition with Marietta. Continuing to follow in the footsteps of Old Vine Red, our port is periodically released in a non vintage fashion so as to allow for a highly consistent product. Lot 2 is a limited production blend of Touriga, Souzao, Tinta Cao, and 30% Zinfandel. Aged in new and seasoned French Oak, it is not as sweet as traditional Portugese styles although it unquestionably has an emphasis on ripe rich fruit complemented by a hint of vanilla and oak.

Zinfandel
The ’05 Zin is a big, rich, evenly balanced wine with lush raspberry fruit. Ripe blackberries dominate the palate yet the wine is balanced and round. This is a lush mouth filling wine that will compliment a variety of foods with its balance and lingering finish. A slight departure from the briary styles of the past, this is a slightly lighter, clean, fruit driven wine. While definitely drinkable now, this wine has the staying power to last for 5-10 years.
