Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard
|
|
Welcome! Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is committed to producing fine Bordeaux-style wines. Our unique soil and microclimate create ideal growing conditions, or “terroir”, for our carefully selected grapevines. We invite you to experience the best wine that the state of Maryland has to offer. Look for our public opening and sales in 2006. Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is the only vineyard/winery in Montgomery County, Maryland—only a 35 minute drive from Washington, D.C. It is identifiable by its signature red barn, silo and windmill. We encourage you to visit the vineyard and winery in 2006. The vineyard is located in the rolling hills of Comus, Maryland. The 85-acre farm abuts the scenic Sugarloaf Mountain conservation and recreation area. The mountain is a Registered Natural Landmark with a wide variety of outdoor recreational pursuits including hiking, horseback riding, biking, rock-climbing, picnicking and communing with nature.

Cabernet Franc
The Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Franc, an outstanding Maryland red wine, is quickly becoming our signature wine. Our 2005 won a Double Gold in the 2007 International Eastern Wine Competition. The Franc demonstrates Mid-Atlantic winemaking at its finest. While excellent now, the Cabernet Franc will be at its best in two years and will continue to age gracefully for another 4 years.
|
Cabernet Sauvignon
The Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is made
in the style of the best new world Cabernets. The wine is rich
and dark with a complex structure. Food pairings for this wine include grilled or lightly sauced beef and aged cheeses. While approachable now, this wine will be at its best in three years and will age well up to 7 years.
|
Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
This is the reserve blend of our award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. Taken from the best lots of the 2005 vintage, the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been aged over 15 months in French oak barrels and bottled at the apex of its flavor and aroma development. This premium wine exhibits the rich bold characteristics of a fine, reserve wine.
|
Chardonnay
The Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay is made in the Chablis style. Without malolactic fermentation, the wine retains its sharp, fruity character. Aging in high quality French oak prevents the "over-oaked" character of many of today's Chardonnays. Food pairings for this wine include grilled fish, shellfish and sharp cheeses. While highly approachable now, this wine will improve with age over the next 2 - 4 years.
|
Circe
A blend of the five Bordeaux varietals, this young, expressive medium-bodied red exhibits deep purple color with aromas of white pepper, strawberry jam and blooming flowers. On the palate, the wine expresses spicy components of black pepper and mint along with black olive, black berry and nutmeg. Circe’s fruit finish lingers only a short time, making it ideal for pairing with just about any meal.
|
Comus
In mythology, Comus is the god of revelry and merriment.
The son of Bacchus and Circe, Comus tempts mortals with a life
of pleasure. We promise our Comus will not work its bewitching powers in a similar fashion, but rather will turn you into a connoisseur of fine wine! This signature wine at Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is a blend of the five Bordeaux varietals,
and shows amazing complexity, depth and character in a Mid-Atlantic red wine.
|
Comus Reserve
Comus Reserve is a wine blended from the five Bordeaux varietals and aged over fifteen months in French oak barrels. This premium wine exhibits the rich, bold characteristics of a fine reserve wine and is certainly worthy of its namesake.
|
Merlot
The Sugarloaf Merlot subtly expresses classic Merlot characteristics. Highly complex, this Merlot surprises with understated elements that separate it from many Merlots. The spice infused fruit nature of this wine will allow it to pair with hearty stews and cassoulets along with satisfying pasta dishes. Approachable now, the Merlot will continue to improve with age over the next three to four years.
|
Pinot Grigio
The stainless steel fermented Pinot Gris is made with classical deference to the fruit, resulting in a luscious and concentrated wine of layered citrus nuance and peerless palate vitality, the most exuberant white on our list. Pinot Gris great love for maritime cuisine, herb pastas, prosciutto, focaccia, and warm weather dining is captured within this wine's style. This wine is meant to be enjoyed young, within 1 to 2 years.
|
Viognier
The stainless steel fermented Viognier is a new addition to our white wine varietals. This highly aromatic vintage exhibits floral characteristics as well as expressions of fruit, particularly peach. This crisp, dry white is meant to be enjoyed young, within 1 to 2 years, and pair well with spicy foods. We enjoy this wine immensely and know you will as well.
