Zaca Mesa Winery

Zaca Mesa Winery We invite you to learn more about our unique Rhône-style wines grown in our estate vineyard. Zaca Mesa’s long history in Santa Barbara, California began in 1972 when we purchased the land and began planting our estate vineyard. In 1978, long before most wineries had thought of growing Syrah, Zaca Mesa dedicated a section of our vineyard to this unique grape traditionally grown in the Rhône valley of France. Our vineyard is still home to Santa Barbara’s oldest Syrah vineyard, the Black Bear Block. In 1995, our choice to dedicate our winery to Rhône varieties was affirmed when our 1993 Estate Bottled Syrah was named #6 on Wine Spectator’s “Top 100” list. That same year, our Syrah was served at the White House for a State Dinner with French President Jacques. Robert Parker, Jr. in The Wine Advocate said of our 1994 Syrah: “…one of the richest, most hedonistic wines per penny spent that I have ever tasted and reviewed.” More recently, Food & Wine said of Zaca Mesa in 2004: “Some of the best estate-bottled Syrahs in the region are found here.” Today we continue our dedication to Rhône varieties by growing 6 different Rhône varietals in our estate vineyard: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Viognier and Roussanne. All of our wines are crafted exclusively from fruit hand picked in our estate vineyard, giving us complete control of the quality of our wines from vineyard to bottle. Each year we estate bottle: Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, Z Cuvée (a proprietary Grenache-based red wine) and a small amount of Chardonnay that is grown in the coolest section of our vineyard. Additionally, we make limited amounts of Black Bear Block Syrah, Z Three (Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah), Z Gris (a dry Rhône-style rosé), and a few other winery-exclusively wines.

Black Bear Block Syrah, Estate Bottled Santa Ynez Valley
This wine displays rich blackberry, cassis, mocha, cedar and our signature sage spice aromas and flavors. The finish lingers from the ripe tannins and smoky oak. This full-bodied wine should be enjoyed over the next ten years.
Chardonnay, Zaca Vineyards Santa Ynez Valley
The resulting wine has ripe apple, pear and banana flavors that combine with toasty oak and vanilla from ten months of barrel aging. This wine will pair well with butternut squash risotto or grilled salmon over the next several years.
Roussanne, Estate Bottled Santa Ynez Valley
On the nose, aromas of apricots, figs, honey and spice fill the glass. A lingering finish has a touch of minerality, a signature characteristic of our vineyard. Enjoy with grilled halibut or rosemary roasted chicken.
Syrah, Estate Bottled Santa Ynez Valley
Our Syrah displays rich blackberry, cassis and our signature sage spice aromas and flavors. The finish lingers from the ripe tannins and smoky oak. This full-bodied wine should be enjoyed over the next ten years. A traditional pairing for this wine is a leg of lamb marinated in rosemary and garlic. However, a peppercorn steak or mushroom risotto would work incredibly well.
Viognier, Estate Bottled Santa Ynez Valley
On the nose, aromas of honeysuckle and Mandarin orange hint at sweetness. However, this wine is dry on the palate with notes of ripe peach and melon. A lingering finish has a touch of minerality, a signature characteristic of our vineyard. A natural pairing would be grilled chicken. If you are feeling experimental, try prawns with hazelnut butter.
Z Cuvée, Estate Bottled Santa Ynez Valley
Each grape adds its own nuances: Grenache adds rich raspberry flavors; Mourvèdre brings notes of blueberry; Syrah, flavors of blackberry and ripe tannins; and Cinsaut offers a slight earthy/dusty note. These layers of flavor enable this wine to pair with a wide variety of foods from mushroom pizza to rosemary crusted leg of lamb. You can enjoy this wine now or cellar for the next five to seven years.
  Z Gris
On the nose, aromas of strawberry, melon, tangerine and guava fill the glass. A lingering finish has a touch of minerality, a signature characteristic of our vineyard. Enjoy with grilled halibut, rosemary roasted chicken or on a warm summer day.
ZThree Cushman Vineyard Estate Bottled, Sanata Ynez Valley
Each grape variety adds its own personality: Syrah adds flavors of blackberry and ripe tannins; Mourvèdre brings notes of blueberry and full mouth-feel; and Grenache adds lush raspberry liqueur flavors. These rich layers of flavor create a wine greater than the sum of its parts and enable it to be enjoyed now or cellar for five to seven years.
