Ladera Vineyards

The Ladera story is a tale of two vineyards, almost at opposite ends of the Napa Valley. Their terrains and their histories are very different. Lone Canyon Vineyard on the flank of Mt. Veeder ranges in altitude up to 1,100 feet; some areas are so rugged and steep it's difficult to stand upright. Ladera's Howell Mountain property ranges in altitude from 1,600 feet to 1,800 feet: a gently rolling terrain, but set on a plateau high above the Napa Valley floor. Our name reminds us of the virtue they share- both produce the distinctly intense fruit of well-drained hillside and mountain vineyards. The founders of these vineyards came from very different backgrounds, but they had this in common: they were adventurers as well as winemakers. They were willing to leave the more easily farmed valley floor for a risky and labor-intensive experiment that they believed would improve the quality of their wines. Lone Canyon Ranch was once a small part of Mariano Vallejo's vast holdings, a portion of which was given as a gift to George Yount in the 1830's. He in turn gave a portion of the land to Charles Hopper, who planted his first vines in the area in 1877. Hopper was a trapper and trader who came to California in 1841 with the first immigrant wagon train. The narrative of his adventures includes tales of keeping starvation at bay by eating grizzly bears and their own mules, and confrontations not only with the native Indians but with General Vallejo himself. In January of 1997, when Ladera purchased Lone Canyon Ranch, remnants of an overgrown early vineyard could still be seen on rugged canyon slopes- the Napa Valley version of a Wild West ghost town.

Directions
From Sacramento: If coming from the Sacramento Airport, follow Highway 5 South to Interstate 80 West to San Francisco. Follow 80 West until you see the signs for Highway 12 - Napa Sonoma. Exit onto Highway 12 west. Take Highway 12 west to Highway 29. Turn right at the light onto Highway 29. Go north to the first stoplight and stay in the right lane. Follow the signs to Napa, Lake Berryessa, Silverado Trail; this will mean you leave Highway 29 at the light. Follow the Silverado Trail until it turns into Solano Avenue and follow Solano until it tees. Turn right at the tee and go a few hundred feet to the next light at the Silverado Trail. Turn left onto the Silverado Trail. Go north on the Trail until Deer Park Road. Turn right and go about 3.5 miles to White Cottage Road. White Cottage is marked with a green road sign before the turn. You can only turn left onto White Cottage. Take this 1.3 miles to the winery. The entrance is on the left and you will see the sign before you reach the turn-in

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2005 Ladera Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is abundant in fragrant aromas of blackberry, vanilla, lilac and sweet oak. With a graceful and rich entry of dark cherries, blueberry and blackberry on the palate, the taste buds are awoken with hints of cocoa, mint and anise. Firm yet supple tannins carry this concentrated wine through to a well-structured and long finish.

Ladera Lone Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine is classically expressive of the wines made from grapes grown on the Ladera Lone Canyon Vineyard. The 2004 vintage will be remembered for a near perfect growing season of moderate temperatures and a timely harvest.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine is distinct from the Ladera vineyard designated Cabernets in that it is a blend of both estate vineyards, and it is a blend of Bordeaux varietals. Both of the Bordeaux varieties adds something different to the wine's complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the varietal character, depth and structure of the wine. Petite Verdot give the wine richness on the mid palate, along with added juicy flavors to the finish.

Napa Valley Malbec
This wine holds true to its varietal characteristics with its dark inky color, rich aromatics and bold masculine structure. The nose has elements of black cherry, violets, red licorice, vanilla bean, white pepper, dark plum, root beer and smoky fig. This wine has a fresh entry with a fleshy and weighty body. Dark and ripe fruit flavors lead to a gargantuan mid pallet which is layered and balanced with soft wet tannins. The wine grips the entire palate for a lengthy and gratifying finish.

Napa Valley Syrah
The 2005 Ladera Syrah is very typical for the varietal and for the rigors of the Lone Canyon Vineyard. The wine has rich, meaty and gamey flavors, with a hint of the bramble fruit characteristic of Lone Canyon. The texture of the wine, a heritage to its mountain location, is very lush with an abundance of powerful, but velvety tannins. The 2005 continues the success achieved in the 2004 inaugural vintage.

Sauvignon Blanc Howell Mountain
Like a coastal drive in a racy convertible, this wine evokes a myriad of sensory delights. It is pleasing to the eye with its beautiful golden hue. The aromas are laden with fresh pear, lemongrass, honeydew and jasmine. The entry of this wine is clean and polished with a lively attack on the palate. The body is viscous and is supported by crisp acidity and slight minerality.The flavors show hints of kiwi, lime, tangerine rind and green apple. The finish is lingering and quenching.
