Flying Fox Vineyard
|
|
We are a small, family run vineyard and winery nestled in beautiful Nelson County. After years of tending our vineyard, we now craft our own Flying Fox wines which include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Viognier. Bring a picnic, share a glass of wine with friends and family and enjoy the views from our patio in summer or the warmth of our fireplace in the fall.

Cabernet Franc
Like our Merlot, this wine is made from
grapes produced in our own vineyard. The
2005 Cab Franc is a soft, light wine, blended
with our Merlot for added color and tannin.
It was aged in the barrel for 15 months and
should be enjoyed over the next two years.
It pairs well with many foods and may be
served lightly chilled.
|
Chardonnay
Our goal with Chardonnay is to produce a crisp,
refreshing white wine. We do that by maintaining
the grape’s natural acidity during fermentation. This
results in a hint of green apple crispness. The flavors
and aroma are citrus fruits, melon and apple. Try it
with steamed crabs or fish with white sauce. Serve
chilled and enjoy now.
|
Fox Red
We produce this wine from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Rich and smooth, this wine is semi-dry and able to stand up to strong flavors such as blue cheese or barbeque. Serve it hot and mulled in the winter, or chilled in the summer. Our "Flying Fox" is now launching into flight from a cannon. Raise a glass to an exciting new adventure!

Merlot
This is our signature wine. Made exclusively with
grapes from vines that we planted, watch over and
harvest from Flying Fox Vineyard. The vineyard is
on a south slope in Afton, with rich soils and lots of
sun. The 2005 vintage was aged in old and new
French and American oak barrels for 15 months.
The tannins in the Merlot are softened with our
Cabernet Franc grapes. Fermented dry, with oak,
cherry and spice flavors and aromas. Drink now or
age up to five years. This wine is delightful with
cheeses or red meats.
|
Petit Verdot
Our Petit Verdot is grown in a perfect one acre corner of our vineyard on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A summer with excellent growing conditions and 18 months of aging in French and American oak produced a wine with deep color, smooth mature tannins and a lingering finish.

Red Table Wine
Sweet wine drinkers are welcome here. Not
everyone likes dry wines with tart tannins.
We produce this wine from a blend of Cabernet
Franc, Merlot and …you can taste it…Concord
grapes. Like our airplane label, this wine is
meant to be fun and enjoyed now.

Trio
A harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with each grape adding its unique notes to the wine. After 18 months of "rehearsal" in the cellar, our best eight barrels were chosen for this limited production, classically styled wine. Gold Medal 2010 Monticello Cup Wine Competition, Platinum Medal 2010 Virginia Wine Classic.

Viognier
This Viognier (pronounced vee-oh-NYAY) is a
beautiful example of the Viognier grape in
Virginia. It is an elegant white wine made from
grapes grown by family members Jane and Jon
Zieman at Ridge Run Vineyard in Stuarts Draft,
VA. The vineyard is on a rocky, windy south slope
with long views of the Shenandoah Valley. The
wine is dry, aromatic and floral, with tastes of
apricot, peaches and pears. Serve chilled, but not
cold. Drink within 2-3 years.
