Naked Mountain Vineyard
|
|
Naked Mountain Vineyard owners, Bob and Phoebe Harper, fondly refer to their start as a hobby that got out of hand. They had been amateur winemakers for years before finding property upon which to establish their vinifera vineyard. The first grapes were planted in the spring of 1976--Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. After continuing the expansion of the vineyard over the next several years, the winery was established in 1981. The largest production is barrel fermented chardonnay which accounts for almost 75% of the production. Riesling, done in the style of a German Mosel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon are also produced. Current hours are 11AM til 5PM Daily.

Black Label Chardonnay
...the signature wine of Naked Mountain accounts for over 75% of our winery production. This is a smooth, rich, dry white wine, vinted in the style of a classic French Mearsault. Over the years this wine has displayed exemplary performance in competition, having won best in show at the Virginia State Fair and the Governor’s Cup. The 2003 has continued this tradition of success in regional, national, and international competitions. Our Chardonnay is composed entirely of Virginia grapes. It reflects the landscape and flavor from some of Virginia’s finest vineyard sites. It is fermented and aged in 225 liter French oak Barrels. The barrels varied from new to five years old. The oak originated in the Allier, Nevers, and Vosges forests. The wine has pronounced chardonnay fruit in the nose. The primary palate flavors are those of toasty vanilla and butterscotch. Balancing out the wine are subtle tones of pineapple, citrus, pear, papaya, and ripe figs - with a kiss of oak. The acids are softened by a full malolactic fermentation, which adds a rich buttery character. The finish is long and in concert with the initial palate impressions.

Cabernet Franc
...a dry red wine with well defined flavors of cherry, toasty oak, and soft tannins. A soft mouth-feel results from the "short vat" fermentation technique. (80% Cabernet Franc, 10% Tannat, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot)
|
Cabernet Franc Rosè
This light bodied, dry Rosè reveals juicy watermelon and strawberry notes, with a hint of orange zeal. The juice was on the skins for just enough time to extract the brilliant garnet color reminiscent of Rose.

Discover ripe black cherry and currant paired with black pepper and a spicy finish.

Sauvignon Blanc
Our 100% varietal Sauvignon Blanc is made from the grape which produces white wines of Bordeaux and the Upper Loire. It is a dry white wine fermented in stainless steel.
It is particularly active on the palate, with good acidity and a developed mineral character.

Scarlet Oak Red
45% Syrah, 45% Mourvèdre, 10% Tannat.
Scarlet Oak Red is Naked Mountain Vineyard’s Rhone style blend. The 2006 vintage is unique to its own, starting with aromas of dark cherry, mint, parsley, raspberry, a bit of toastiness, and oak, hence the name. The taste of almonds, dark cherry, blueberry, and strawberry rises on the front of the palate. This wine finishes with honey dew, vanilla and blueberry and a smooth tannin structure. Best served with roasted meats or game, lamb chops, mole sauce, smoked chili, gourmet pizza, heavily seasoned Indian cuisine, hard cheeses, dark berries and chocolate.
