Husch Vineyards

Husch Vineyards Husch Vineyards is a small, family owned and operated winery. It is the oldest winery in the Anderson Valley appellation, located in Mendocino County (Northern California) just 2 1/2 hours north of San Francisco. Under the direction of 3rd generation family members Husch produces 22 different wines , of which six are distributed nationally. Small lots of special wines are available exclusively at our tasting room, a converted pony barn dating back to the late 1800s. Quality is the key word at Husch: in the vineyards, in our winemaking and in our friendly customer service. It all starts in the vineyard. Our wines are made from grapes grown on vineyards managed by the winery, allowing us to bring consistent, high-quality fruit to the bottle.

Directions
It is just a 2 1/2-hour drive from San Francisco. Traveling northwest from Cloverdale on Highway 128, the scenery varies from old apple orchards and sheep country to rich vineyards and redwood groves. The tasting room is just 5 miles beyond Philo. Our tasting room is still unadorned rustic. It was originally a farm animal/grain storage building. A deck, back door and window have been added but it has kept its warm and cozy feeling.

  Cabernet Sauvignon
Our 2002 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of cassis, eucalyptus, coffee and smoke. On the palate, look for similar notes with black current and sage flavors. The fruit is supported by round tannins and finishes with toast, smoke and chocolate. The depth and concentration of this wine will allow it to age gracefully for the next 10-20 years.
  Carignane
Carignane as a varietal wine? First of all, it's hard to pronounce (care-in-yawn) and secondly it's used primarily for blending with other red varieties. However our Old Vines Carignane does indeed show varietal character and uncommon drinkability. The vines producing these grapes were planted in the 50's at La Ribera Vineyards along the Russian River and are still producing juicy clusters of aromatic berries; albeit at 2 tons per acre, compared to their heyday 30 years ago when 15 tons per acre was normal. The resulting wine has a beautiful violet color and aromas of fresh berries and spice. The flavors show ripe raspberries and blackberries with a smoky vanilla finish.
  Chardonnay
Bright, clean, and lively fruit essences complement the aromas of nutmeg, hazelnut in this Chardonnay. The round mouthfeel reflects the oak aging and stirring of the lees. Lingering vanilla notes provide a wonderful finish for the wine.
  Chardonnay Special Reserve
The lush ripe and intense fruit characteristics of the Anderson Valley provide aromas of peaches, caramelized pears, and roasted nuts. A long, lingering finish makes this big wine smooth and polished. This wine pairs nicely with seafood or chicken with a rich sauce, or strongly flavored cheeses
  Chardonnay, La Ribera
Grapes for this vineyard designate Chardonnay come from La Ribera Vineyards located along the Russian River. Selected small lots were barrel fermented and aged in French oak; 60% underwent malolactic fermentation. Aromas of ripe apple, pear and delicate floral combine with apple butter, honey and tropical fruit flavors. The soft, lingering finish invests the next sip.
  Chenin Blanc
Our Chenin Blanc is known for its inviting aromas of pear and white peach with a hint of beeswax and honey. To the palate this off-dry wine brings flavors of melon and pear while the balance of bright fruit and zesty acidity keeps the wine refreshing. Even “non-wine drinkers” have been known to fall in love with the Husch Chenin Blanc.
  Gewürztraminer
Floral aromas – including rose petals, carnations, violets and honeysuckle – develop quickly in the glass. More subtle notes of spice and green tea are also evident. In the mouth the wine confirms its floral character and adds a spicy component. The mouthfeel is surprisingly broad in the mid-palate and the finish is zesty. This wine drinks nicely young but has the structure to support an additional year or two of aging. Delight in the Husch 2004 Gewurztraminer with Asian cuisine, turkey dinner, or try this wine with our French Onion Soup or Onion Tart.
  LA Blanc
The resulting wine has initial aromas of honeydew, fig, wildflowers, chamomile and herbs. The broad palate further suggests notes of citrus peel and mint. It finishes off-dry, with a crisp finish and lingering tones of tropical fruit and orange peel. This versatile wine is excellent with light entrees of poultry and seafood. Its fruit-forward quality makes it a fine choice for picnics or sipping before dinner
  LA Blanc
This year’s vintage is an enticing blend of Sauvignon Blanc (63%), Chardonnay (25%), Chenin Blanc (7%) and Muscat Canelli (5%). The grapes were harvested and brought directly from the vineyards to the winery where they were immediately pressed. The pressed juice was cold-fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks to preserve the subtle aromas and flavors of the varieties.
  Late Harvest Gewürztraminer
The vineyard showed little botrytis (the “noble rot” often associated with late harvest wines) but an overwhelming concentration of flavor in the rose-colored berries. Two acres of vineyard yielded only four tons of fruit which was crushed and soaked overnight to further extract the intense varietal flavors.
  Merlot
Grapes from our Merlot were grown along the Russian River in the warm Ukiah Valley. After crushing, the fermentation takes place in small open-topped bins. The must was punched down by hand for the delicate extraction of flavors. The wine aged for 20 months in French oak barrels.
  Mojo Red
The 2004 vintage offers a deep garnet color. Aromas reminisce of black fruits -- cherry and blackberry -- with a whiff of cinnamon and clove also evident. The wine offers similar flavors, a nice structure, and a hint of smoke on the finish.
  Muscat Canelli
Since the 2003 vintage we have fermented the Muscat Canelli in stainless steel tanks using a yeast ‘tea-bag’ that is being pioneered by Husch. The fermentation yeasts are trapped inside a mesh bag that is lowered into the tank when we are ready to begin fermenting the juice. Just before the thriving yeasts consume all of the sugars in the juice we stop the fermentation process by simply pulling the 'tea-bag' from the tank. The result is a wine with a touch of sweetness to balance the flavors and acid of the original fruit.
  Pinot Noir
This vintage is highly aromatic, offering classic Pinot Noir notes of cherry, violets, earth and spice, as well as interesting subtle notes of rhubarb and pomegranate. The flavors echo the aromas in this elegant, well-balanced wine. A polished finish shows hints of oak, and repeats the fruit-forward flavors. As with all Husch Pinot Noirs, this wine can be enjoyed tonight, or aged in the cellar for the next 3-5 years.
  Sauvignon Blanc
With the release of our 2004 vintage, Husch celebrates 25 years of crafting award-winning Sauvignon Blanc. The tradition began back in 1980, when the first Sauvignon Blanc crop from La Ribera was harvested. The resulting wine - only about 200 cases - was an instant success. A tradition was born and the loyal following for Husch Sauvignon Blanc has continued to grow over the years. Near half of our Sauvignon Blanc is barrel fermented, and 25% of the final blend is aged for five months in neutral oak. The balance is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. This mixed approach gives the wine a soft mouthfeel while maintaining the vibrant and crisp character of the varietal. The 2004 harvest was one of the earliest on record, and our Sauvignon Blanc shows the beautiful acidity that resulted. Aromas of lemongrass, lime, melon and fresh mint are evident on the nose. The racy acidity complements the lemon custard, fresh grass and fennel notes on the palate. Well balanced, this wine shows well-integrated fruit and acidity with a dry, crisp finish.
  'Vine One' Chardonnay
This wine was conceived in 1979 when our vineyard manager recognized one special Chardonnay vine in the field which produced a unique fruit. Aromatic and intense, we believed the fruit of this single vine would make an exceptional wine. Over the past 25 years we have propagated "Vine One" from that original vine to over 5000 vines. With an entire field now producing this special fruit, we have crafted our first vintage of "Vine One" Chardonnay. The aromatics are floral with a fruit driven, rich mouth-feel. An herbal, minty component adds complexity to this debut vintage.
